The project offers a modular course to managers of Primary Health Care (PHC) in each of the states where the project occurs (Alagoas, Maranhão, Paraíba, and Piauí)
There are 4 modules of 3 days each with a break of 2 months between the modules.
There are on average 40 students in each state
10 teams are formed in the course and each one identifies a problem and intervention strategies to improve the health indicators in their respective state.
The PHC managers cannot be away for long periods of time from their activities. Considering this, in order for them to get the type of capacity-building training that allows them to develop new concepts, skills, and management practices, the training program offered to these health managers was designed with the following characteristics. The training program:
uses innovative ways to structure training time and tasks;
employs educational methods from the field of adult learning, with time for reflection and experiential learning;
provides training that brings together the various levels of care (State and Municipal Health Secretariats) and the different technical/specialty areas (whether in moments of reflection and learning, or in the development of interventions for health problems) – thus forming work teams;
develops and utilizes local human resources (state, municipal and community groups);
offers criteria for selecting priority health problems based on evidence, utilizing national data and presenting the evidence behind the problem;
makes methodologies and tools such as results-based management (RBM) widely available;
provides support from consultants who specialize in PHC, gender and race equality, Results based management, epidemiologists, educators and librarians, among others.
